Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) or Skilled Nomination Class SN Subclass 190 Visa: How To Apply
Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) Visa is for someone who has an occupation in shortage (click here to see if your occupation is in need). You will need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and be nominated by a state or territory.
Scoring at least 65 points
You must obtain at least 65 points in a points test (click here to calculate your points).
If you are invited, your score must be at least equal to the score stated in the invitation to apply for Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) visa. Your points must meet the “pass” mark applicable to your nominated occupation because invitations are ranked on the basis of your declared skills and attributes in your EOI. This act as a disincentive to claim more in EOL in order to secure a higher ranking to obtain an invitation.
There is no requirement for your points to be identical to the score stated in the invitation. If you have made a mistake, you may correct this error if your corrected score meets the qualifying score or “pass mark” and the corrected score is high enough for an invitation to be issued.
You can also apply to the state or territory where you like to live and submit an application for the government to nominate you for a Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) visa. If your nomination application is successful, the Department of Immigration (Department of Home Affairs) will invite you to apply for the visa. Do I need to have my skills assessed?
Before you are invited, you must have a positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation.
If your skills assessment is for a trade occupation assessed by TRA for your study in Australia, the assessment should specify if you has come through the Job Ready program (click here to learn more about TRA). If you are a medical practitioner, you must provide evidence of full registration is a favourable skills assessment, i.e. certificate issued by the AHPRA that you hold a full unconditional general medical registration or a conditional specialist registration. Your skills assessment is usually valid for 3 years or less if specified.
Professional membership or registration is not a skill assessment. If your skills assessment was made on the basis of a qualification obtained in Australia while you held a student visa, the qualification must have been obtained as a result of studying a registered course.
Do I need English?
When you are invited, you must have competent English, for example, at least 6 in each of the 4 components in the IELTS test that was undertaken less than 3 years ago. You may be exempted if you hold a passport issued by the UK or USA or Canada or NZ or Republic of Ireland.
Any family members who are not exempted must have at least functional English, that is, at least 4.5 in the IELTS test, or will be required to pay a second visa application charge or fee.
Including family members
Members of your family unit can make a combined application with you for the Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) visa. Your family members cannot make a separate visa application unless a newborn child or a new partner (spouse or de facto partner) or new partner’s dependent child. You and your family can apply for this visa in or outside Australia and when the visa is granted. You and your family members do not be at the same location and the time of visa application or visa grant.
No family members can be added once the visa is granted. No family member can marry or enter into a de facto relationship before entering Australia.
